Campaign closed: petition offered on 23 November
From Drcampaign
The petition campaign is closed. Over 58,000 citizens have given their (confirmed) signature against the principle of mandatory retention of telecommunications traffic data. The signatures are printed out today, Tuesday 22 November, and will be offered tomorrow afternoon, Wednesday 23 November to the chair of the LIBE committee Jean Marie Cavada and to rapporteur Alexander Alvaro.
On 23 November, between 15.00 and 18.30 PM the LIBE committee will have its crucial debate on the principle of data retention. The next morning, on Thursday 24 November LIBE will vote (between 10.00 and 11.30 PM). If this committee accepts data retention, chances are very slim that the European Parliament will reject the proposal in plenary, on 13 or 14 December 2005.
We can only hope enough MEPs will use their senses and uphold human rights, in spite of all lobbying in favour of the surveillance society.
